The United Kingdom gives up sovereignty over the Chagos Islands
The BBC has written an interesting article on a history-making negotiation between the UK and Mauritius. After more than 50 years of being part of the Commonwealth, the small cluster of Islands located in the Indian Ocean is now returning to the governance of Mauritius. This includes the atoll known as Diego Garcia which is a known United States Military base for navy ships and long-range bomber aircrafts. Despite Mauritius taking over governance over the islands, the UK government is providing a financial aid package which includes annual payments as well as payments that will go towards infrastructure support and investment.
The article includes quotes from the likes of US President Joe Biden and the UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy as evidence and references. There is a fair majority that believes that this was the right move and a step towards freedom for the people who call the Chagos Islands home. Joe Biden stated that this deal is a "clear demonstration that through diplomacy and partnership, countries can overcome long-standing historical challenges to reach peaceful and mutually beneficial outcomes." However, a second-generation Chagossian living in the UK was interviewed and stated that "I feel betrayed and angry because Chagossians have never been involved in the negotiations." The history between the UK and Mauritius is rocky, so I believe that these negotiations will be polarizing for many reasons.
I found this article an important read to further develop my thoughts and political insights into the way that negotiations were dealt with as well as furthering my understanding of the history between the UK, the Chagos Islands, and Mauritius.
