This is an interesting article by Al Jazeera about the banning of X in Brazil. This relates back to ideas of censorship and disinformation that we have covered earlier in the course, and how whilst founder of X Elon Musk is accusing the Brazilian government of censorship and blocking the truth. The Brazilian government is criticising the platform for its unregulated spread of disinformation and lack of legal representation in the country. While the Brazilian president is left leaning in ideals, Musk is more right wing affiliated and typically is associated to similar right Wong figures. This article also relates to the ideas of wealthy elites and their influence in governments. Whilst Brazil is taking a stance against X, it is clear that Musk is closely tied to many politicians both in America and globally. This allows him to do certain things without backlash because he is wealthy and supported by powerful people. In this instance however, this obviously did not align with some of the ethics, values, and political goals of the current Brazilian government.
It’s really interesting to see how states are beginning to recognise the threats and lack of regulation of this platforms. I think it’s a fine line between censorship and regulation. The Brazillian Government seemed to have fair demands for Elon Musk, whilst the USA continuously moving to ban tiktok seems largely driven by anti-chinese censorship. It will be interesting to see if Brazils actions will spread to more states, putting pressure on Musk to make some much needed changes to the platform- or whether is right wing shift will take precedence.
