With the recent decision from the Wellington City Council to block Mayor Tory Whanaus plan to sell its shares in the Wellington Airport, her 'long term financial plan' - similar to a budget - is now ruined. Much of the hopeful projects and approaches to issues like infrastructure were set to be dependent and reliant on the moving of these shares into growth funds and accounts. Now two years into its term, the WCC are once again being described as 'divided' and 'locked', incapable of working out the politics and formulating a cohesive plan to guide Wellington away from looming job,economic, and cost of living crises. With this comes a returning question. If something isn't figured out, or Whanau doesn't leave her role through resignation or vote of no confidence, could we see the nations capital be locally governed by commissioners. We have seen it happen already in Tauranga, to mixed reviews and opinions. And despite the National party questioning the Tauranga commissioners appointment, Ministers Chris Luxon and Simeon Brown have been very critical of the competence of councils all around the country. I believe commissioners being inserted in Wellington is a very real possibility, with the National government probably preferring local leadership in the capital being more sympathetic to their government agenda rather than being filled with leftists and Green and Labour party members. How would Wellington handle a loss of democratic control over its cities leaders? The capital has a more politically engaged population than Tauranga, and despite many citizens and grassroots interest groups pushing to keep the shares and block this plan, I wonder if they intended to lose their council entirely for the time being. Would this bode well for Wellington? Is the implication of commissioners undemocratic? These are all difficult questions to answer but it certainly wont make me or other residents feel secure.
