President Javier Milei of Argentina's decision to cut public funding for universities has sparked outrage with students all over Argentina. Milei excuses these cuts due to the overwhelming economic crisis in Argentina taking priority, but students are rioting nonetheless, chanting "How can we have freedom without education". Going so far as to hold classes on the street (as pictured below), the public university system in Argentina is clearly in danger. Milei's various proposed economic reforms do little to benefit the youth of Argentina, hence why it is the students themselves taking to the streets to oppose these policies. As discussed in class, students are often some of the first people to mobilise in support of a cause, and this is evident in the case of Argentina. Economic crisis was cited as one of the significant contributing factors to political opportunity structures, as it contributes to divisions within the population, which gives people the opportunity and incentive to organise protests and demonstrations. There are also compelling incentives for the citizens of Argentina, both students, workers, and professionals alike, to get involved in these protests, as the right to publicly funded education is at stake.
